Lydia (Harlequin Historical, No 302)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1996)
Average review score:

Storyline ....Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "The war was over, but the battle had just begun ... Sarah Parker had tried to escape her past in a dusty mining town. But nay hope of redemption was lost once Donovan Cole arrived, carrying battle-seared memories and a bellyful of hate -- all for the woman she'd been during a time she'd hoped to forget! "The Angel of Miner's Gulch" they called her. Fallen angel, more likely, Donovan swore. For the "sainted" Miss Sarah had been a lying, coldhearted Yankee spy who knew how to capture a man and make him her own -- forever!"

Makbara (A Masks Title)
Published in Paperback by Serpent's Tail (August, 1994)
Average review score:

This is Goytisolo's best work to date.First published in 1980, Makbara demonstrates a radical use of linguistic and structural experimentation. Now that Goytisolo has loosened his ties to his mother country (since completing the Mendiola trilogy), his search for his "authentic self" is challenged by the indomitable formalizations of the spoken language. The pleasure of reading Makbara comes from a reading which does not depend on such linguistic verbal formalities, and deciding whether other forms of communication are possible. This novel is intricate and challenging on all levels in accord with Goytisolo's intent that his writing is not for everyone to read.

Managing People: A Practical Guide
Published in Paperback by PSI Research - Oasis Press (December, 1990)
Average review score:

practical guide for students or professionalsThis book has been used as required text in a college management class, students responses were extremely positive. There is good use of contemporary management terminology and practical applications of the implications of management ideas. Students particularly appreciated the author's utilization of clear ,informative exercises to illustrate management concepts. Students indicated that the team building, motivating, transformation, becoming multicultural and manging stress chapters were timely and important. The strongest support for the book was evidenced by the fact that most of the students planned to keep the book for use in professional careers. I am so impressed with the book that I frequently give it as a gift to professionals who give lectures to my classes.

Masterpieces of Japanese Prints: Ukiyo-E from the Victoria and Albert Museum
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (April, 1999)
Average review score:

The Floating WorldUnexpected earnings from the Great Exhibition of 1851 (at the Crystal Palace in London) were used to establish the following year the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world's largest collection of applied art and design. In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry made his famous expedition to Japan, which had been isolated for 250 years, and set up trade agreements. Examples of Western technology (locomotive, telegraph, camera) were given to the Japanese, and Japanese artifacts to Westerners. Of particular impact were Japanese woodcuts of the 17th through 19th centuries, called ukiyo-e or images of "the floating world," tens of thousands of which ended up in museum collections throughout the world. Many (perhaps most) American and European artists and designers were influenced by the then-strange stylistic traits of these prints (crisp black outlines, bold flat areas of color, asymmetrical arrangements, and dramatic cropping), among them such people as Whistler, Manet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Aubrey Beardsley, and Frank Lloyd Wright. "All my work," wrote Vincent van Gogh to his brother, "is in a way founded on Japanese art." This stunning volume is a full-color treasury of 130 of those woodcuts (introduced and annotated by scholars) from the many now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Memoirs of Fray Servando Teresa De Mier (Library of Latin America)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 1998)
Average review score:

A fascinating read! This is an extraordinary book! One of the Oxford University Press' 'Library of Latin America' series, exquisitely translated from the Spanish by Helen Lane, this is a book worthy of the highest praise. Fray Servando Teresa de Mier y Noriega (Mexico, 1763-1827), persecuted by the Inquisition for thirty years for his challenge to the colonial mentality and his willingness "to play an active role in movements of emancipation," These memoirs were written in the Inquisitor's prisons. It is truly a most extraordinary book, a topsy-turvy book -where Europeans are the "barbarians"! An exalting experience! De Mier was famed in his own time as a scholar and a thinker and indeed, the 240 pages of this most uncommon of books, this rarity, unsheathe the most remarkable figure of a man, and enlighten us, almost with a novelist's succinct eye, about the true nature of the world and its passing, and our time in it. Impossible to overstate the importance of this publication. Simply first-rate!
